Amyloid is a protein that deposits in the body's cells and may accumulate between the nerve cells (neurons) in the brain as we age. Recently, we have successfully isolated a substance (amyloban) from a mushroom called Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceum) that has been shown to support the survival of nerve cells in the circumstance that modeled after the toxicity of amyloid (Japanese patent 394,3399). Also, research indicates that other active compounds (hericenones) from the same mushroom may stimulate the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) in the brain.
