Red yeast rice inhibits HMG-CoA reductase (primarily due to the monacolins content of red yeast rice). The principal active constituents of Red Yeast Rice are (0.4% of) a group of compounds named Monacolins (including Mevinolin, a compound that is chemically identical to Lovastatin, a Pharmaceutical HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor).

Red Yeast Rice Research
Researchers have determined that one of the ingredients in red yeast rice, called monacolin K, inhibits the production of cholesterol by stopping the action of a key enzyme in the liver (e.g., HMG-CoA reductase) that is responsible for manufacturing cholesterol. The drug lovastatin (Mevacor? acts in a similar fashion to this red yeast rice ingredient. However, the amount per volume of monacolin K in red yeast rice is small (0.2% per 5 mg) when compared to the 20?0 mg of lovastatin available as a prescription drug. This has prompted researchers to suggest that red yeast rice may have other ingredients, such as sterols, that might also contribute to lowering cholesterol.

Along with its evaluation in animal trials, red yeast rice has been clinically investigated as a therapy for reducing cholesterol in two human trials. In one trial, both men and women taking 1.2 grams (approximately 13.5 mg total monacolins) of a concentrated red yeast rice extract per day for two months had significant decreases in serum cholesterol levels. In addition, people taking red yeast rice had a significant increase in HDL (“good? cholesterol and a decrease in LDL (“bad? cholesterol. Elevated triglycerides were also found to be lowered.

Red Yeast Rice contains rice that has been naturally fermented with red yeast (Monascus purpureus) according to traditional methods. Produced domestically, this product is similar to red yeast rice that has been used in culinary applications in Asia since at least 800 A.D. Red Yeast Rice is considered beneficial for adult men and women when taken as part of a lifestyle program that includes regular exercise and a healthy diet.

Red yeast rice has been used in China for centuries as both a food and as a medicinal substance. It is made by fermenting a type of yeast called Monascus purpureus over red rice. In Chinese medicine, red yeast rice is used to promote blood circulation, soothe upset stomach, and invigorate the function of the spleen, a body organ that destroys old blood cells and filters foreign substances. In addition, this dietary supplement has been used traditionally for bruised muscles, hangovers, indigestion, and colic in infants. Recently, it has been discovered that red yeast rice contains substances that are similar to prescription medications that lower cholesterol. There is also growing interest in evaluating red yeast rice for use as a natural food dye and/or preservative.

Dosage Recommendations
The usual dosage of red yeast rice (capsules) for lowering elevated cholesterol levels is 600 - 2,400 mg per day (taken as one to four divided doses of 600 mg each). This equates to a dosage of 2.4 - 9.6 mg of mevinolin per day.
