Phosphatidyl Serine
Phosphatidylserine - Phosphatidyl Serine
Phosphatidylserine is a natural nutrient found in the brain which helps increase cell flexibility. This, in turn, enhances memory, focus and clarity. Naturally derived from soy, Phosphatidylserine is ideal for those seeking to improve cognitive function, and those who experience occasional absentmindedness or mild memory problems associated with aging.
Phosphatidyl Serine is a phospholipids compound derived from soy lecithin that plays an essential role in cell membrane composition and inter-cellular communication. Phosphatidyl Serine is a major structural component of neural membranes where it assists in the conduction of electrical impulses and facilitates the activity of neurotransmitters involved in learning, memory, and mood. These properties make Now Phosphatidyl Serine an ideal supplement fro the support of cognitive function.
Phosphatidylserine is the major phospholipid in the brain that plays a major role in determining the integrity and fluidity of cell membranes. Normally the brain can manufacture sufficient levels of phosphatidylserine; however, if there is a deficiency of methyl donors like SAM, folic acid, and vitamin B12, or essential fatty acids, the brain may not be able to make sufficient phosphatidylserine.
Phosphatidylserine Benefits:
Phosphatidyl Serine Uses
The primary use of phosphatidylserine is in the treatment of depression and/or impaired mental function in the elderly. Very good results have been obtained in numerous double-blind studies. In the largest double-blind study, a total of 494 elderly patients (between 65 and 93 years of age), with moderate to severe senility were given either phosphatidylserine or a placebo for 6 months. The patients were assessed for mental performance, behavior, and mood at the beginning and the end of the study. Statistically significant improvements were noted in the phosphatidylserine-treated group in mental function, mood, and behavior.
Phosphatidyl Serine Research
In a double-blind study of depressed elderly patients, phosphatidylserine improved depressive symptoms, memory, and behavior. Unlike typical antidepressant drugs, phosphatidylserine promoted this improvement without influencing the levels of serotonin and other monoamine neurotransmitters, suggesting another mechanism of action. Improved brain cell membrane fluidity may be one explanation. Another is the fact that phosphatidylserine can reduce cortisol secretion in response to stress. Typically cortisol levels are elevated in depressed patients.
Elderly patients who are depressed or have impaired mental function can try to take Ginkgo biloba extract and supplement the diet with the necessary nutrients their brains need to manufacture phosphatidylserine-essential fatty acid.
The extract of Ginkgo biloba leaves, standardized to contain 24 percent ginkgo flavone glycosides and 6 percent terpenoids, demonstrates remarkable effects in improving many symptoms associated with aging. It can help delay and in some cases reverse the mental deterioration in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. For a while, Ginkgo biloba extract may help enable the patient maintain a normal life and stay away from being put in a nursing home. In one study, 40 patients with a preliminary diagnosis of senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type received either 80 milligrams of Ginkgo biloba extract or placebo three times daily for 3 months. Patients were assessed by standard tests and brain wave studies (EEG tracings) at baseline and at 1, 2, and 3 months. Results indicated that Ginkgo biloba extract improved all parameters, usually in the first month, compared to the placebo. Consistent with other studies with Ginkgo biloba extract, the longer Ginkgo biloba extract is used, the more obvious the benefits become. Ginkgo biloba extract was well tolerated, and no side effects were noted in the trial.
